#Foodthanks Party!

Next week marks our third annual #Foodthanks celebration. This is the time of year that we want to slow down and reflect on all the blessings we have. One of those blessings is all the food choices we have in this nation. Farmers, ranchers, processors, butchers, bakers, chefs, grocers, truckers and more all make it possible for us to have healthy food on plates.

This next Tuesday and Wednesday (November 20-21) we encourage you to show your #Foodthanks !

Empower All of Agriculture on June 14th

AgChat Twive and Receive

This is going to be a very exciting week for all of agriculture. AgChat Foundation is excited to share with you a great opportunity to empower all of agriculture. And we need YOU to make it happen. That is right, this week you can make a difference in agriculture, with just a click of a button.

AgChat Foundation was selected to take part in a  nationwide giving event on Thursday,June 14th. Across the nation not-for-profit organizations will be competing to receive $30,000 in prizes in a day long Twive and Receive event. YOU can help the agriculture community come out on top. As far we can tell, AgChat Foundation was the only agriculture organization selected for this event. By winning, our agriculture community will show the nation that farmers and ranchers really do care about the mission to connect with others to tell our story.

Winning Thursday’s Twive and Receive event will also mean:

  • Support of the weekly #AgChat conversation,
  • Continuation of the premier social media training conference,
  • More regional social media training conferences in YOUR area.

We honestly do not know what it will take to win, but we do know that we have a very supportive community of agvocates just like YOU. We have a goal to have 500 agvocates donate on Thursday, June 14th.

Here is what you can do help:

On Thursday, June 14th make a donation on the AgChat Foundation Twive and Receive fundraising page. Any donation amount helps! Consider donating a dollar a day ($365). That amount will help sponsor one person to the highly successful AgChat Foundation Training Conference. If you are a past participant, you know how powerful meeting and training with other agvocates is. Give the gift of agvocate empowerment to someone else.

Share that you support agriculture and the AgChat Foundation mission. On June 14th follow and use the hashtag #Twivereceive to see AgChat Foundation’s progress on Twitter. After you make your donation grab a Twive and Receive Twibbon for your avatar. Also, make sure to share the AgChat Foundation Facebook page to let others know that you support “Agvocacy”

We are really pumped up for this event! I hope that you can join AgChat Foundation and all of agriculture on that day and show your support for our mission of empowering farmers and ranchers to connect in communities using social media platforms.

Remember: Donations must be received on June 14thAny amount helps!

Thank you to everyone who supports our mission. We cannot do it without you!

The Complexity of Food-Call to Action

By: Darin Grimm, AgChat Foundation President

In-depth discussions of our eating habits has gone mainstream.  No longer can we simply grab a simple meal, a salad, a burger and fries, a bowl of cereal, without our choices being analyzed, praised and criticized.  Often all at the very same time!

food, farms, real food, jamie oliverThe random collision of two events this Saturday, May 19th demonstrates the incredible diversity that exists.  First, we have Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Day.  Jamie, a leading celebrity chef, has made it a personal mission to “get people cooking again”.  His effort has gained a lot of traction, there’s additional goals that have been added, but at it’s core, it’s about getting people to cook their own food.  As a farmer, I think that is a wonderful thing!

The second event this weekend is Ag Pizza Day.  It has been organized by a group of farmers as a way to say “Thank You” to Domino’s Pizza.  Thanking Domino’s for turning to the experts in animal care and behavior, as they evaluate their corporate purchasing strategies.  Everyone loves pizza, and I hope you join the rest of the ag community in having a Domino’s Pizza this weekend.  HSUS, Dominos, farmers, ranchers

At first glance, these two events might seem almost contradictory, yet they really represent all the diversity, the challenges, but yet the potential that is our food system.  There will not be a single method that feeds us affordably into the future.  It will require a diverse food supply, folks who cook at home ranging from frequently to only on rare occasion, folks that would rather pay someone else to prepare most of their meals.  It will require the most modern technology we can develop to coax the maximum production from our animals and soil, and it will require tender, loving hands to care for those same animals and soil in the way only a heart can.

Yes, we need both, we need the diversity in our food system.  So my encouragement to you, recognizing the diversity that is being celebrated on May 19th, have a Domino’s for lunch, and than treat yourself to a home-cooked dinner of whatever it is you enjoy making/eating the most!

This Farmer’s View on our Biggest Success

So, AgChat Foundation, that silly little social media thing that has consumed far two many hours of my recent life (just ask my wife…) is  turning two years old this week.  It’s a good time to step back and ask:  Have we accomplished anything?  Has this effort been worth it?  Outside of having far better insight into what farmers around the country may be having for breakfast,  what good has been done?

As I sat and pondered these questions, the obvious things came to mind – helping farmers tell their stories, teaching folks how to use the dizzying array of tools and technologies out there, efforts towards reaching out to those outside of agriculture.  All these have been good, successful, and most importantly ongoing efforts, but at the risk of being mis-understood, none of them are particularly noteworthy, unique, or special.  There’s a large and growing number of organizations involved in many aspects of telling the farm story.  As an officer of the AgChat Foundation, I look on them as partners, not competitors.  There’s so much work to do, it’s exciting to see so many focused on sharing the story of the miracle of modern agriculture.

So what sets the AgChat Foundation apart?  What makes us unique?  The answer is clear, AgChat Foundation represents ALL of agriculture.  You see, whether your a chicken, dairy, corn, or cotton farmer, whether you tap trees for maple syrup sold at your own retail store or grow soybeans for Japan.  It doesn’t matter if your organic or conventional, very large or small and part time, whether you call yourself a farmer or have some other role in the ag industry,  AgChat represents YOU!  I believe it’s critical that as part of your plan for sustaining your business, you see the value in  connecting, learning and sharing with those who depend on you for the food that sustains them.  As a Foundation, we are focused on helping you make those connections through social media platforms, and I believe bringing together the diverse agriculture people involved in making that happen is our  greatest strength.

No other organization works so diligently to represent all of agriculture, not just those that may chose to be members of our effort, not a specific commodity, region (well.. North America I suppose), production practice, or shoe color.  No, AgChat Foundation at it’s core is about ALL of agriculture, and giving voices to every one of the individuals involved!

With that goal, I think we’ve succeeded tremendously, and I look forward to bringing even more of the ag community together, working together to share the story of the diversity of American agriculture far into the future.  When you look at the task before us, I think it’s safe to say we’ve only just begun.

Thank you again to everyone who wakes up everyday to not only care for animals and the land, but also allow non farmers the chance to see into  your farms and ranches via social media. Here are several other note worthy posts by AgChat Foundation board and advisory board members:
