Executive Director Search Launched

AgChat Foundation, Inc., the leader in agricultural social media communications, has launched a search for an Executive Director.

“Since her hiring in 2011, Emily Zweber has been a crucial member of our team here at AgChat, serving as our Executive Director. During her tenure, she has been a tremendous asset in successfully steering ACF to become the leader in educating and equipping farmers, ranchers, agribusiness professionals and educators with the tools needed to effectively tell their stories of agriculture through social media platforms,” Foundation President Jeff VanderWerff said, “We are saddened by the loss of Emily and wish her well in her future endeavors.”

The new Executive Director will oversee the general administration of the organization including fundraising, execution of major goals, management of the organization’s structure and personnel and facilitation of all major activities and meetings including board and committee members, among other responsibilities. Job description 

Executive Director, contract position

Responsible to

The AgChat Foundation’s President of the Board of Directors or the duly designated representative.

Summary of primary job functions 

The executive director is responsible for executing all major goals and objectives, including fundraising for this organizations as well as follow all procedures and policies established by the Board of Directors. The executive director will provide leadership, direction and guidance of all of the Organizations activities as well as continually evaluate effectiveness of operations and programming. This position will manage the organizations structure and effective personnel. They will take the lead on facilitating all major activities and meetings including board and committee members. This position will represent the organization to regulatory bodies, other agencies, community and civic organizations, donors, funders and supporters,  and the general public.

Duties and responsibilities 

General Administration

  • Design and execute a nonprofit fundraising strategy to build a sustained base of donors and sponsorships.
  • Oversee organization and execution of special events to support agvocacy training.
  • Coordinate the development and execution of the AgChat Foundation communications and marketing plan.
  • Design and execute a Foundation leadership development plan.
  • Set the agenda of Board meetings, assist with guiding committee work, and communicate outcomes to a broader audience.
  • Organize and implement a process to share Foundation communications, documents, and work products with the Board of Directors, Advisory Board members, Committee members, volunteers, and other partners as needed. Google Docs is the Foundation’s current document sharing platform.
  • Develop and execute a plan for the #Agchat / #Foodchat Twitter conversations, to include developing an editorial/topic calendar, organizing a panel of moderators, and a process to engage participation.
  • Coordinate with appropriate Foundation committees and Board members to insure the Foundation is in compliance with State and Federal laws/regulations, and insure the Foundation is in compliance with its own Bylaws.
  • Works with the Board of Directors on governance policy issues by providing support and by initiating approved recommendations or actions
  • Recommends to the Board changes to policies and procedures that would improve the organization
  • Submits all information, reports and records as requested or required by law to appropriate government officials or the board of directors


  • Coordinate the development of the AgChat Foundation budget.
  • Ensures that operating results established in the annual budget are achieved and the control of operating expenses within budget
  • Perform day-to-day management, to include managing the Foundation’s profit and loss statement, balance sheet, donations, contributions, and performing Quickbooks entries as needed.
  • Ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial accounting and reporting
  • Signs all checks


  • Familiarity with Agriculture
  • Fundraising Experience
  • Background in Communication
  • Be able to effectively use & navigate different Social Media platforms
  • At minimum a high school diploma

Hours and Compensation

  • Minimum of 20 hours a week
  • Salary and bonus information upon request

March 11th, 2014 – AgChat on Water, Water, Water

AgChat on Water, Water, WaterFeeling High and Dry? In many parts of the US, water is taken for granted. But there are concerns about the future “easy access” to water. In the last few years the concerns about water for agriculture have gained national prominence, mainly through the news about fires and lack of hay for cattle. This AgChat conversation shares some thoughts on what farmers and ranchers are doing to take on the challenges the lack of water brings.
